Thanks to documentaries like ‘Blue Planet’ and the Netflix produced ‘Chasing Coral’, we know that coral reefs are suffering thanks to rising ocean temperatures. However, recent information has brought to light that chemically based sunscreen can induce the same bleaching response.
Our understanding of the damaging impact of global climate change, marine pollutants and other stressors on the world’s coral reefs is constantly growing; but over the last ten years a growing amount of research has been published to suggest that chemical ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate which are commonly found in big-name sunscreens, can have an equally toxic effect. Sobering when you realise that, according to a 2008 European study published by Environmental Health Perspectives, up to 14,000 tons of sunscreen is deposited in the world’s oceans each year. Even if you never dip a toe in the ocean – the amount washed down the drain from your evening shower after a day enjoying the sunshine at home is enough to cause a huge amount of damage. So much so that earlier this year, the state of Hawaii passed a bill that will prevent the sale of sunscreen containing the ingredients, in an effort to protect its reefs.
While no sunscreen has been proven to be completely ‘reef-friendly,’ sunscreens that use active mineral ingredients, like our Natural Protection Moisturiser SPF25 which uses Titanium Dioxide, have not been found harmful to corals. Not only that, but they offer more reliable protection, too. Whereas chemical sunscreens work by absorbing the sun’s rays and disperse the heat off our skin through a chemical reaction, mineral sunscreens act like a mirror; they reflect the sun’s rays away from the skin, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays in a way that is much kinder to sensitive skins and less likely to cause irritation. What's more, they don’t ‘break-down’ as quickly as chemical sunscreens, meaning they’ll offer longer protection (although we recommend reapplying every two hours in the sun).
Although the world’s coral reefs are under threat now as never before, there are plenty of smaller actions we can take to make a difference. And, at least with natural SPF, you can spend a day on the beach and in the sea, knowing that you’re leaving nothing damaging behind you in the sea or in the sand.
